Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Triangle

A.H. Maslow's Needs Hierarchy Triangle

Abraham Harold Maslow first proposed his hierarchy of needs in 1943, before providing us with extra detail in his 1954 book "Motivation and Personality".

He also released a more recent (and cheaper) book in 2022, called "A Theory of Motivation".

It remains popular in psychology and psychotherapy today.

It was designed as a model of how humans emotionally develop and grow.

His initial view was that each of the five levels must be satisfied, in order for individuals to have motivation for the next level.

However, more recently, the few is that there is a greater overlap.

The proposal was that psychological disturbances result from needs not being met.

2) Safety and Security

Personal security, emotional security, financial security, health and well-being, safety needs against accidents and illness

3)Social Belonging

Friendships, intimacy, family

4) Self-esteem

Recognition, status, importance, and respect from others.

5) Self-actualisation

The realization of one's full potential, which in Maslow's later years became associated with altruism and spirituality; living beyond oneself.
